Windows

To keep your Microsoft Windows based system up and running make sure to use the Windows Update feature built into the software.  Unless otherwise specified, the other sites listed on this page offer other downloads that are Windows compatible.

Mac

For the Mac addicts out there, the first place to start is at the Apple site.  They have all the software updates you'll need to keep your system up to date.  They also have software like the iLife series and Safari, an all new and original web browser designed specifically for the Mac.

Linux

For the more adventurous type you can try a whole new type of operating system.  Linux is based on the old mainframe Unix software and has been developed as an open-source software.  This means that anyone can freely download their favorite version and install it on their system.  You also have the right to go in and alter the software to suit your needs.  There are many different flavors or distributions (distros) of Linux to choose from.

Linux DistroWatch
This is where you can find all the various Linux distros in one place.  So do some research, find the version you'd like to try, and start downloading.  For those without broadband internet connections, it is advisable to head to your local computer store and buy a prepackaged version of Linux that will come with additional benefits like tech support and a written manual.

Once you download your favorite Linux distro, you'll need to get it up and running.  The first place to look is the website of the particular distro you've chosen.  You can also check out the beginners and install guides at LinuxOnline, TechTV, LinuxQuestions.org, and LinuxNewbie.

Once it's up and running, you can download other Linux software through Linux itself or try LinuxDownloads.org, Tucows, and Download.com for more software.

Desktop Wallpaper

These sites offer hundreds of free wallpapers to make your computer something to look at.  Like TechTV's Leo Laporte says, "It's your personal computer, so personalize it."

SoftshapeArt
Softshape Art
This is their latest wallpaper. Everything from photos to very creative and colorful original artwork.


Digital Blasphemy
They have dozens of free wallpapers, some submitted by site members.  Their members area has a more extensive collection.

DeviantART
A site dedicated to all sorts of ways to change your system.  In addition to wallpaper, they have fonts, photos, themes, and a dozen other categories of user contributed material.

Desktop Customization

Other ways to personalize you PC is to purchase software that changes the way your windows and menus look.  The two most popular are WindowBlinds from Stardock and StyleXP from tgtSoft.  Both have community sites where users contribute new themes and styles (WinCustomize for WindowBlinds and ThemeXP for StyleXP).

Software & Utilities

ZDNet & CNet
Both sites catalog a wide range of software, free and paid.  Most are reviewed and commented on by site members and rated based on how good the software is.

TechTV
Only lists software that's completely free in their Free Download of the Day.  They offer a wide variety from games, utilities, and even software for alternative operating systems like Mac, Linux, and Palm.  All software is recommended by TechTV viewers or staff and is checked to make sure the software isn't spyware or dangerous.

FREE Stuff

Free?  Did someone say free?  Come on, who doesn't like to get something for nothing?  Well, unlike in life, when it comes to software, you really can get free stuff.  Most of the links on this page already will take you to mainly free downloads and updates.  If you're looking for more, check out the following sites dedicated to the best FREE stuff on the web.
