The applications and operating systems that run your hardware may cost more than the
hardware itself. There are several categories of software: proprietary software that
requires you to purchase it, shareware software that asks you to pay for it after a
specified period of time, and freeware which is free to download and redistribute.
Most of the talk about Linux has been that it is
becoming as full featured as other operating systems like Windows and Mac OS X, but if
free to download and alter according to your needs. If you don't have the bandwidth to
download 2 or 3 cd's worth of data then buying the software already prepackaged is usually
much less than other operating systems. Like the operating system, most Linux applications are also free to download and use.
The sites listed in the General category will do a
good job of steering you and reviewing the software that's out there. If you're
looking for free software, and who isn't, check out our Downloads
page for links to places to get free and almost free software for your use.
